No, you did not UNDERSTAND the division of fractions. I am wondering what that more mathematically-advanced educational system is, how you know that it's more mathematically-advanced, and how you know that you (collective you) understood division of fractions. Nobody said that area models were NECESSARY.īut actually your word problem doesn't fit 3/4 divided by 1/3 = 3/4 x 3 = 9/4. And we still understood division of fractions just fine - in 4th grade, not in 6th.

You don't think it's important for your kid to understand how and why the math works? No wonder US adults suck at math in comparison to even not so developed countries.
